Curriculum

Curriculum Introduction

To enable all our children to enjoy, achieve and develop creativity, the curriculum is delivered through a thematic approach to teaching with each year group adopting a curriculum connector/theme.

We aim to deliver an inspiring curriculum and teaching and learning in all subjects is delivered through fostering cross-curricular links. To ensure balance and a secure grounding in the basic skills associated with all subjects, discrete teaching is also planned for. All children in Key Stage 2 receive specialist teaching in music and PE. A unit of modern foreign language, French, is taught in Year 6.

The curriculum presented at St Thomas of Canterbury School fulfils the requirements of the National Curriculum, embraces the principles of Every Child Matters and the recommendations of the Rose Report, 2009.

In the Foundation Stage, the curriculum is based on the Curriculum Guidance for the Early Years Foundation Stage and the Surrey Early Years Guidelines. It conforms to the standards set for the learning, development and care of young children.

As an extended school, we also offer access to a range of services and activities which supports and motivates children to achieve their full potential

Cooking with Numbers is a Creative Partnership project that has just been launched at St Thomas of Canterbury School to help teach maths creatively through cooking. St Thomas of Canterbury made a successful application to participate in the Creative Partnership. This is a government flagship scheme that promotes creative learning and develops key skills. We are working with our creative partner Shirlee Posner to try and make mathematics more relevant through developing links to other curriculum areas. Currently we are rolling out a series of practical cooking sessions for each year group. These sessions will deliver maths objectives through cooking. Their hands-on cooking experiences will lead to relevant investigations using numbers and data processing. So in addition to practicing weighing and measuring of dry and wet ingredients, measuring temperature and time and learning a range of cooking skills, pupils will also learn some business basics as they work towards our special food event in January.

To find out what your child will be making in their first practical session click on the link to their year group below for  details. Recipes used in class can also be downloaded for home use.
